Oh, the dreary days of February! It’s cold in many places, and though the days are short, the list of National Holidays and Observances is long. The entire month, of course, is dedicated to Black History, but it’s also “Return Your Shopping Cart Month” and “Pull Your Sofa Away from the Wall Month.” Believe it or not, any given day in February might be devoted to as many as twenty different occasions. For instance, February 2, aside from Ground Hog’s Day, was also:
- Change Your Password Day
- Decorating With Candy Day
- Dignity Action Day
- Dump Your Significant Jerk Day
- Freedom Day
- G.I. Joe Day
- Grammy Awards
- Hula in the Coola Day
- National Baked Alaska Day
- National Dark Chocolate Day
- National Get Up Day
- National Freedom Day
- National Serpent Day
- National Unclaimed Property Day
- National Yorkshire Pudding Day
- Robinson Crusoe Day
- Spunky Old Broads Day
- World Hijab Day
Here in our office, Susan says “Spunky Old Broads Day,” is a holiday she could get behind. I can totally imagine her drinking margaritas with her friends and causing some mischief. Ditto for “Hula in the Coola Day” that might bring a little tropical warmth to this cold winter month. We’d give “Decorating with Candy Day” a try, but will take a pass on “Change Your Password Day.” Haven’t we all had enough of trying to remember our first-grade teacher’s name?
Take a look at what you can celebrate tomorrow, February 20:
- Clean Out Your Bookcase Day
- Friday Fish Fry Day
- Hoodie Hoo Day
- International Pipe Smoking Day
- National Caregivers Day
- National Cherry Pie Day
- National Comfy Day
- National Handcuff Day
- National Leadership Day
- National Love Your Pet Day
- National Muffin Day
- National Student Volunteer Day
- National Tartar Sauce Day
- National Whistleblower Reward Day
- No Politics Day
- Women in Blue Jeans Day
- World Care Day
- World Day of Social Justice

I don’t need a special day to love my pet, but maybe some people do. It makes sense that “National Tartar Sauce Day,” falls on the same day as “National Friday Fish Fry Day.” Add a slice of cherry pie and you can celebrate three holidays at once.
“National Hoodie-Hoo Day” was created in the late 1980s to help us overcome the winter-time blues. To celebrate, go outside, at exactly 12 noon on February 20th local time, wave your hands over your head, and shout “Hoodie-Hoo” to scare away winter. (Sounds like something the spunky old broads would do.)
There are more reasons to celebrate ahead.
- February 26this “National Carpe Diem Day,” so go out and seize the day.
- For those of you who have kiddos in your house, February 27th is “National Pokemon Day,” and February 28th, is “National Tooth Fairy Day.”
How are you celebrating the end of winter?
Whatever you do, have fun and remember—Spring’s sunshine is just a few weeks away and every day is a great day to read.
